Job Summary
A jury bailiff serves an as important link between the court, the jurors and the public. While court is in session, the bailiff will assist the judge and jurors and assure compliance within strict guidelines and procedures of the court

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position.  Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully with or without reasonable accommodations to be qualified for the position.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

100% General Duties:
  • Attends to the needs of jurors, escorts jurors to and from the courtroom and sequesters them as necessary.
  • Communicates with and assists judges, court clerks, sworn court security officers from the Sheriff's Department (if present) and the Jury Clerk.
  • Assists with preparing courtroom and jury room for trial
  • Maintains an orderly and secure courtroom in conjunction with sworn court security officers (if present).
  • Supervises and directs jurors on lunch and other breaks, as allowed.
  • Maintains a clean, orderly and well-supplied jury room.
  • Guards the jury room door during deliberations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education Qualifications

Education and/or Experience Requirements:
  • Highschool education preferred.
  • Military or law enforcement experience is preferred.

Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
None.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Qualifications
In order to perform the functions and responsibilities of the position (listed above) the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential.
 
  • General knowledge of legal terminology and court system.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Ability to follow established work rules, policies and procedures and able to exercise a certain amount of independent decision making in accordance thereof.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly with users of Court Services.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective and positive working relationship with court staff, court participants and members of the public.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality (both inside and outside of court).
  • Ability to work the allocated hours of the position including late jury deliberations.

  • Prolonged periods of sitting.
  • May be asked to lift up to 50 pounds at times.

Work Environment

Work environment is fast-paced and can be stressful with varied challenges arising at any time while also dealing with agitated/hostile customers.
