Job Summary
The Jail Behavioral Health Specialist provides supportive behavioral health services to inmates of the Ozaukee County Jail.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position.  Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully with or without reasonable accommodations to be qualified for the position.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

65% Supportive Behavioral Health Services:
Individual and group counseling sessions with inmates to provide options with coping strategies, stress management, anger management, and other behavioral health issues. This also includes providing referrals as indicated and collaborating with community partners to support inmates. Refer inmates to jail prescriber if psychotropic medications are indicated.

25% Assessments:
Completes ASQ Assessment for inmates who screen positive for non-acute suicidality during intake. Assess inmates experiencing acute psychiatric symptoms to determine if they are safe to be placed in the general population, if support should be maintained in holding, or if an emergency detention is necessary.

5% Discharge Planning from Jail Setting:
Links inmate to re-entry program for continued services post release. Collaborates with inmate and behavioral health services for continued support post prelease.

5% Training/Other:
Attends in-service training to maintain standards, and certification. Reviews current behavioral health research and education on cutting edge information pertaining to all duties listed above. Monitors and reviews caseload regularly, maintains up to date records and documentation. Performs any other duties that may be assigned by the Jail Administrator, Sheriff, or designee.

Minimum Education Qualifications

Education and/or Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in social work or counseling, Master’s degree preferred.
  • Social work or counseling experience recommended but not required.
  • Experience working in a jail setting and social services field preferred, but not required.
  • Knowledge of applicable Wisconsin State Statutes.


Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Qualifications
In order to perform the functions and responsibilities of the position (listed above) the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential.
 
  • Good communication skills and the ability to problem-solve independently, including in emergent situations.
  • Willingness to follow directions from supervisors, complying with agency/county directives, state laws, licensing rules and regulations and certification standards that cover individuals, agencies, and program guidelines.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records for each inmate.  Excellent verbal skills are essential to communicate clearly with clients and other staff members.  Ability to read and to understand clinical reports and professional literature.
  • Knowledge of the spectrum of behavioral health illnesses, symptomatology, psychotropic medications, and the problems these can create and how to effectively treat the mentally ill individual, including providing appropriate interventions for symptoms, suicidality, chemical abuse, and the social, medical, and environmental factors that impact on persons with mental illness.
  • Ability to work in a jail facility.
  • Ability to professionally address conflict and anti-social behaviors.
