Job Summary
The Paralegal-Discovery Coordinator is responsible for managing discovery in the District Attorney’s Office. Coordinates with law enforcement agencies to obtain the needed discovery information. Accepts electronically referred supplement reports and adds to discovery. Upon receipt of discovery, stores, copies and distributes to the defense attorney when appropriate. Manages digital discovery files in PROTECT and Axon (evidence.com). Uploads reports/videos from other agencies and attaches to appropriate case. Redacts records as needed. Trouble shoots problems with media and resolves them as needed. Assists prosecuting attorney in trial preparation requests.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. 60% Discovery Coordination:
Corresponds (via letter/memo/email) with appropriate agencies to request all needed/available discovery related to case. Follows through to ensure that agencies have been fully compliant with our office’s demands. Assures discovery is received. When digital media is received from assisting agencies uploads, copies and stores. Notes the case. Organizes and refines the discovery into a format that can be used by the defense, and in such a way that we can later determine what was given and whether it was complete. Manages digital case file in Axon (Evidence.com). Responds to inquiries from defense attorneys about discovery. Takes payment and provides discovery access when appropriate.
25% Trial Preparation
Review cases set for jury trial to ensure that all discovery has been received. Assists prosecuting attorney in preparing for trial as required. Creates and manages exhibits if necessary. Downloads digital evidence to a shared drive for evidentiary hearings wherein video, body cams, squad cams need to be reviewed by the prosecutor and/or played in the courtroom.
4% Request Certified Records:
Corresponds with (via letter/memo/email/phone) with appropriate agencies to request certified records for use as evidence, including transcripts, court records, medical records, driver records, etc.
10% Review Case Files:
As time permits, reviews initial reports, supplements, and other discovery materials for charged cases to determine if anything is missing and available as discovery.
1% General Office:
Assists in general office duties as needed or assigned.

Minimum Education Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Requirements:
- Associate degree in paralegal and/or legal/criminal studies.
- Two or more years’ experience in criminal/law office setting.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
None.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Qualifications
In order to perform the functions and responsibilities of the position (listed above) the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential.
- Knowledge of court procedures, practices, and legal terminology.
- Practical computer experience.
- Experience working with databases and document processing will be weighted favorably, including any relevant work with file sharing systems.
- Knowledge of modern office equipment.
- Knowledge of spelling, punctuation, and grammar; skill in word processing, data entry, and editing documents.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to perform difficult and varied tasks.
- Be very detail oriented.
- Familiarity with the criminal justice system would be helpful.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer.
- Periodic periods of standing or walking.
Work Environment
Work is performed in an office environment. May have to deal with irritated, agitated, hostile, or violent individuals.
