Job Summary
The WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor provides breastfeeding support and education to pregnant and post-partum women in the WIC program.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position.  Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully with or without reasonable accommodations to be qualified for the position.  Other duties may be required and assigned.

50% Breastfeeding Services:
Provides breastfeeding education, identifies breastfeeding complications, and offers support and referrals to Lactation Consultants and WIC staff. Teaches monthly prenatal or breastfeeding group classes. Leads annual World Breastfeeding Week celebration activities.

40% Client Services:
Introduces and builds supportive relationships with pregnant and breastfeeding moms who qualify for the WIC program. Initiates phone calls, text messages, in-person meetings to provide opportunities for breastfeeding education. Documents in participant’s electronic health record in real time with accuracy.

10% Administration:
Provides continuing education related to breastfeeding. Attends monthly staff meetings for WIC and the department. Attends outreach events to promote Breastfeeding Peer Counseling Program. Participates in local and state Breastfeeding coalition meetings and activities.

0-100% Other Duties as Assigned:
Other duties as assigned (i.e.: emergency response)

Minimum Education Qualifications

Education and/or Experience Requirements:
  • High School Diploma required.
  • Requires personal experience with breastfeeding in the last five years at the time of hire.
  • Requires personal experience as a WIC participant.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
N/A

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Qualifications
In order to perform the functions and responsibilities of the position (listed above) the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential.
  • Spanish language skills desired.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft Office programs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Access to a motor vehicle and commitment to meet and maintain the County’s automobile insurance requirements.
  • Ability to apply time-management skills and ability to prioritize job-related activities.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations in a culturally sensitive manner.
  • Ability to communicate with persons of varying levels of education, understanding, and values.
  • Ability to accommodate flexible scheduling to address program needs.

Physical Requirements
 
  • Prolonged periods of sitting and working on a computer.
  • Periodic periods of standing or walking.

Work Environment

This position may be asked to work out of both Washington and Ozaukee County offices.
